Shropshire is England's largest inland county. Largely rural, with a varied landscape, the county town is Shrewsbury.
From the early 18th century Coalbrookdale, east of Shrewsbury, became an important centre of iron-production during the industrial revolution, under the direction of Abraham Darby and his descendants. In 1779 the world's first major iron bridge was constructed across the River Severn nearby at what is now Ironbridge.
