At the beginning of the 20th century the ancient town of Ankara was in decline, with a population of some 30,000.
In October 1923, following the Turkish War of Independence, Ankara became the capital of the new Republic of Turkey.
Government buildings were established in Ulus, to the west of the ancient Citadel. Later, the new centre, Yenişehir, developed to the south.
Today the city has a population of over 5 million.
