The province of Mardin, bordering Syria, extends eastwards to the Tigris River.
Historically, a large Syriac Orthodox Christian community, now much diminished, flourished in the region, particularly in the Tur Abdin area, east of Midyat. A number of monasteries and churches remain.
The provincial capital Mardin is situated on a hillside overlooking the Mesopotamian Plain to the south.. The city is noteable for its decorative architecture.
Nearby is the Syrian Orthodox Monastery of Deir az-Zafaran.
