Ar-Raqqah

Tabqa Dam
Extending southwards from the border with Turkey, the Governorate of Ar-Raqqah is one of fourteen provinces in the country.
Through it runs the Euphrates River. Between 1968 and 1973, the Tabqa Dam, intended to provide both land irrigation and hydroelectric power from its reservoir, Lake Assad, was constructed at Ath-Thawrah, some 40 km upstream from the provincial capital Ar-Raqqah.
Several archaeological excavations took place along the Euphrates valley before the sites were flooded by the lake.
