The modern village of Tille, on the west bank of the Euphrates east of Kahta, was partly built into the side of an ancient mound ( höyük ), occupied from prehistoric times through to the Medieval period. The site was excavated 1979-1990 by the British Institute at Ankara ( BIAA ), in advance of its destruction by the waters of the lake formed behind the Atatürk Dam.
