The Monastery of Christ Pantepoptes, 'Christ the All-Seeing', was founded in the late 11th century by Anna Delassena, mother of the Byzantine Emperor Alexius I Comnenus.
After the Ottoman Conquest of 1453,  the monastery church became a mosque, whilst one of the monastery buildings was used for a time as an
imaret ( soup kitchen ), by which name the mosque is known today.
