The Pera Palace, seen here one damp afternoon in 1991, opened in 1895 as a luxury hotel to cater for increasing numbers of European travellers arriving in Constantinople on the Orient Express. Situated in Tepebaşı, it is close to İstiklal Caddesi, which, as the Grande Rue de Pera, was the main thoroughfare through Pera, the city's European quarter.
Originally built next to municipal gardens, the hotel now finds itself alongside the busy Refik Saydam Caddesi ( although this is a quiet Sunday ) whilst the paved area in the foreground is a car park.
