The small town of Samsat occupies part of the site of the Late Hellenistic - Roman city of Samosata.
Following the construction of the Atatürk Dam, the inhabitants resettled in Yeni ( New ) Samsat nearby, or dispersed to larger towns such as Kahta or the provincial capital Adıyaman.
