The province of Nevşehir occupies part of the historic central Anatolian region of Cappadocia.
In antiquity Cappadocia occupied a large area extending northwards from the Taurus Mountains towards the Black Sea Pontus region, being bounded to the east by the Euphrates River. From the 4th century the country to the east and south of what is now the town of Nevşehir was a focus of early Christian activity.
Tourists are drawn to the area by its spectacular volcanic landscape, the historic rock-cut churches and monasteries around Göreme, east of the provincial capital Nevşehir, and to the south, the underground 'cities' of Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı.
