The province of Adıyaman was established in 1954, having formerly been a district of Malatya Province.
Its economy has traditionally been based on agriculture, although the construction of the Atatürk Dam led to the loss of much fertile land beneath the waters of the lake, and the province has yet to fully benefit from irrigation schemes.
The 1970s and 1980s saw the development of
oil-fields near Kahta, and later, west of Adıyaman city.
Increasing numbers of tourists visit the area to view archaeological sites, which include the mountain-top Nemrut Dağı.
Displacement from the Euphrates area, together with ongoing urbanisation, saw the population of the city of Adıyaman increase by over 100,000 to 203,000 in the twenty years to 2010.
