The Euphrates near Köklüce
The river flows through a gorge south-east of the village of Köklüce ( formerly Ölbüş ) in the district of Gerger.
In 1954, three Germans, Hans Seefeld, Heinz Sokoll and Egon Kuhn, paddled their kayaks along this stretch of water. Inspired by the journey of compatriot Oskar Speck, their mission was to paddle to Australia, in this case to see the Melbourne Olympics of 1956. They made it. But did they make it on time ?  View upstream to the north-east.
This area, at the upper reaches of the lake formed
behind the Atatürk Dam, has now been flooded.
