Robert Fitzrandolph began construction of the Keep at Middleham in the 1170s. It replaced an earlier motte and bailey fortification a short distance away. The curtain wall and towers were added in the 13th century. In the 15th century a number of ranges were built against the curtain wall. Middleham was the childhood home of Richard, Duke of Gloucester, later to become King Richard III.
This view is of the 15th century Gatehouse at the north-east corner of the complex.
A number of racehorse trainers are based in and around the small town.
