Fountains Abbey was founded in 1132 by Benedictene monks from York who a year later decided to join the Cistercian Order. The Church was completed by about 1170 with alterations being made later in the 12th century. The east end of the Church, seen here, was remodelled in the 13th century. The Tower was added by Abbot Marmaduke Huby sometime before 1526.
The Abbey was dissolved in 1539.
